5 Steps to Find Your Pop/Rock Rep
Welcome! Start Here!
Step 1: Make a List of 10 Pop/Rock Shows & Roles.
KEY REMINDERS:
- If you're not sure what shows you are right for, consult your resource list.
- Ask colleagues and coaches. They will have seen or been in shows you haven't and will be able to introduce you to new options.
- Research artists similar to you and see what roles they have played on Broadway, On Tour, in Workshop productions, in regional productions, etc.
- Search trade websites for audition notices which will include show synopses and character descriptions/audition requirements: Playbill, Backstage, Actors Access, and Equity (you'll need a pal with access if you aren't in the union).
- Search licensing company websites (Musical Theatre International, Concord Theatricals, Stage Rights, Disney Theatricals). They have show synopses and often character descriptions.
Step 2: Choose One Show and Make a Listening List of 10 Songs
KEY REMINDERS:
- Song Finder Resources:
- Spotify Artist Radio Lists and Genre Lists
- Friends, Colleagues, and Coaches
- The Social Media Hive
- Our Wail with Shannah Rae Facebook community group is a great place to ask this question. If you aren't a member, you can join here.
- IMPORTANT: Pull up the Lyrics to the song FIRST and run it through the Storytelling Eliminator.
- Are they lyrics highly repetitive? If so, cut it from the listening list.
- Is there a clear "I Want" or Need to Communicate To Someone. If not, cut it from the listening list.
- Do you connect with what the writer is saying? If not, cut it from the listening list.
- Note: If this ends up cutting your whole list, that's good! It means you're one step closer to getting what you need! Just go back to your song finder resources and create a new list.
Step 3: Run it through the Rep Wringer
KEY REMINDERS:
- Download your copy of the Rep Wringer, listen to each song, and run it through the filters.
- Trust your first instinct in regards to opinion answers. Do your research on the others.
- Don't discount something due to fear of being able to sing the genre/style. (That's what we Wail classes are for!)
- Songs that are all green are YES! Green/Yellow combos are MAYBE. Any red means CUT IT.
Do you have at least 2-3 songs that are Green or Green/Yellow? Great! Move on to Step 4.

Step 4: Rank Your Songs
KEY REMINDERS:
- Use the point system to rank your songs. Start with the 1 or 2 songs that have the highest points and then put the others on your maybe list.
- Song could be used for multiple shows: 1 point for every show the song could serve.
- Song has easily identifiable cut: 0 points if no easily identifiable cut, 1 point for an easily identifiable short or long cut, 2 points if both short AND long cut.
- Song is already piano based/piano friendly: 1 point (Think Elton John, Billy Joel, John Legend, Alicia Keys-The piano composers).
- Love it Level: Now add your Love It Level number from your Wringer Spreadsheet.
